\n \nT he Darwin family has remained one of the most prom inent scientific dynasties in Britain from the tur n of the eighteenth century. Drawing on ongoing re search for the Leverhulme Trust funded project ‘Da rwinian Inheritance: Communication and Empire in t he Making of a Scientific Dynasty’ this talk aims to understand the Darwins as a family. Working thr ough numerous land books\, family trees and the Da rwin Family Portrait Collection held by Darwin Col lege among other things\, this talk explores how g enerations of the Darwin family actively researche d their own history. It aims to answer the questio n of why the Darwin family carefully curated their heritage\, outlining the different forms this res earch took and the purposes it served across three centuries.
\n \nDr Edwin Rose is currently a Leverhulme Trus t Early Career Fellow in the School of Philosophy\ , Religion and History of Science at the Universit y of Leeds\, and Bye-Fellow and Deputy Praelector at Darwin College\, Cambridge. His current researc h project\, Darwinian Inheritance: Communicati on and Empire in the Making of a Scientific Dynast y\, examines the cultural and historical form ation of the Darwin family legacy.
\n \nDr Rose received both his MPhil and PhD from the Depa rtment of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge in 2021. He subsequently held the Munby Fellowship at Cambridge University Library\, where he researched the early colonial a nd religious history of the Cambridge Botanic Gard en\, before becoming a researcher at Darwin Colleg e for the project The Darwin Family and Cambri dge: Science\, Art and Nature.
\n \nBe tween 2022 and 2025\, Dr Rose was Principal Invest igator on the AHRC-funded project Natural Hist ory in the Age of Revolutions\, 1776–1848\, e xploring the relationships between Indigenous know ledge and natural history in the Pacific\, while a lso serving as Advanced Research Fellow at Darwin College\, Cambridge.
